ETICA SUPPORTS THE ENVIRONMENT
The E.T.I.C.A (EMAS acronym that stands for Tourism in Internal
and Coastal Areas ) project aims at improving the standards for
the safeguard of the environmental heritage in the coastal area
of the province of Teramo, thus strengthening its tourist attractiveness.
EMAS LOVES THE ENVIRONMENT
The project aims at supporting 7 coastal area municipalities in
the province of Teramo in order to develop an environmental management
system in compliance with the EMAS European Regulation, i.e. a
voluntary system for those organisations that are willing to improve
their environmental management efficiency. The objective implies
the following criteria for the organisations which wish to join
the project:
• full compliance with the environmental regulations;
• accurate monitoring of the environmental parameters;
• appropriate management of the environmental risks;
• resource rationalisation and cost saving;
• more opportunities for those organisations which work
in the
market and to the environmental values;
• better quality of life and work for the local communities,
involvement
in the identification of environmental policies and objectives.
A UNIQUE CHALLENGE FOR 7 MUNICIPALITIES
IN ABRUZZO
Thanks to ETICA, a 45-km long coastal area, including the Municipalities
of Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto, Giulianova, Roseto
degli Abruzzi, Pineto, Silvi, is committed to achieve the prestigious
EMAS registration for the first time in Italy.
THE EUROPEAN GUIDELINES
The E.T.I.C.A initiative is financed by the European LIFE Environment
Programme. LIFE is the only specific tool that supports the development
and implementation of the EU environmental policy. More specifically,
LIFE-Environment finances pilot and innovative actions aimed at:
1. integrating environmental issues in the planning and valorisation
of the territory, including urban and coastal areas;
2. guaranteeing the sustainable management of underground and
surface water;
3. minimising the environmental impact of the economic activities;
4. guaranteeing the rational management of the waste flows;
5. reducing the environmental impact of products.
AN AMBITIOUS PROJECT, A COMMON OBJECTIVE
The EMAS registration requires the effort and co-operation of
several institutional representatives, and even citizens and tourists.
The accomplishment of EMAS standards in the 7 coastal area Municipalities
in the Province of Teramo involves directly more than 500 people
in the achievement of this extraordinary result for Italy, i.e.
the implementation of a quality system in a large territory.
FIGURES
The 7 Municipalities involved in the project play a key role for
tourism in Abruzzo. About 100,000 people live in a 200 square-km
area, but this figure triples during the summer period, up to
300,000 people, including tourists and residents. The participation
of the inhabitants, institutions and tourists is essential to
the success of the project. This factor could create difficulties
for the management, but promoting sustainable tourism is a worthwhile
common goal for everyone.
